BEEKEEPING 101 Interested in becoming a beekeeper? The Beekeeping 101 Workshop is a FREE, three hour workshop, open to the general public, on how to become a beekeeper. Taught by UWS Apiary Manage and Professor of Biology Dr. Edward Burkett, this workshop will provide you with the general knowledge that all beginning beekeepers need to succeed. Topics covered will include “Do I really want to raise honey bees?”, “What is a Honey bee?”, the history of beekeeping, basic equipment, tools, protective gear, cost, purchasing bees and equipment, legal issues, urban vs. rural beekeeping, setting up an apiary, Bears – Skunks – Raccoons, and installing your first bees. In this workshop you will get to handle and learn to use beekeeping equipment and we will actually assemble a Langstroth beehive from the bottom up. The workshop will conclude with a question and answer session. This workshop is a MUST for anyone considering becoming a beekeeper, but everyone interested in honey bees is welcome to attend.
